Direct answer
Direct answerTo sell digital products in Spain, adapt the sales page to peninsular Spanish, charge in euros, offer the payment methods Spanish buyers use, explain strong customer authentication at checkout, and record the buyer's consent before granting access to the content.
Does Latin American Spanish sell in Spain?
It works for the content, but it slows down the sale. A course recorded in Mexican or Colombian Spanish is easy to follow in Spain. The friction shows up on the sales page, the checkout, and the emails: a buyer in Spain notices right away that the copy was not written for them, and that gap weighs most at the moment of payment.
The clearest differences are in forms of address and everyday vocabulary.
| Latin America | Spain | Where it shows up in the sale |
|---|---|---|
| ustedes (you, plural) | vosotros | page headlines and group emails |
| computadora (computer) | ordenador | course access requirements |
| celular (mobile phone) | móvil | payment and access instructions |
| carro (car) | coche | examples and stories in the copy |
Adapt what the buyer reads before paying first. If you already have a Latin American version, like the one in our guide to selling an online course in Mexico, use it as the base: the work is vocabulary and tone, not a new translation. Testimonials and examples set in Spanish cities do more than any single word swap.
How do buyers in Spain pay online?
Cards are the baseline, and Bizum is the local method worth checking. Debit and credit cards cover most online purchases. Bizum is a Spanish method tied to the bank account: according to Bizum's online shopping page, the buyer enters the phone number linked to the service and confirms the payment in their banking app notification.
- Cards. They work on any international checkout and go through strong customer authentication, covered in the next section.
- Bizum. It only shows at checkout if your payment processor offers it. Confirm with your processor before you promise it on the sales page.
- Digital wallets. Apple Pay and Google Pay shorten mobile payment, as we explain in Apple Pay and Google Pay at checkout.
The currency is the euro, the same as in Portugal. Showing the final price in euros keeps the buyer from doing exchange-rate math at the last step. How local currency affects the decision is covered in local currency conversion at checkout.
What does strong customer authentication change at a European checkout?
It adds a confirmation step, usually in the buyer's banking app, before the payment is approved. The EU payment services directive, PSD2, requires strong customer authentication when the buyer initiates an electronic payment. That means combining two of three factors: something the buyer knows, something they have, and something they are.
In practice, the buyer enters the card, the bank opens a confirmation step, and only then is the purchase approved. For a Spanish buyer this is routine. For a seller based outside Europe, it is one more step between the decision and the paid order, and three habits make a difference:
- Warn the buyer. One line near the pay button saying the bank may ask for confirmation in the app reduces the feeling that something went wrong.
- Test with a European card. Make a real purchase and check that the confirmation step opens properly on mobile.
- Separate declines from drop-offs. If Spain converts below other countries, check whether buyers left at the confirmation step or the bank declined. The method is in checkout conversion rate by country.
The rule allows exemptions, but the buyer's bank and the processor decide when to apply them, so do not build the offer around them. More on approval in Europe is in our guide to payments and approval in Europe, and what to do when approval drops is in low approval rate in international sales.
Users spend most of their time on other sites. This means that users prefer your site to work the same way as all the other sites they already know.
Which refund and tax rules apply in Spain?
Buyers have a 14-day right of withdrawal, and tax follows the buyer's country. Both rules come from the European Union and apply in Spain.
Right of withdrawal. The EU's Your Europe portal explains that online purchases can be cancelled within 14 days without justification. For digital content, such as a recorded course or an e-book, the right ends once the download or stream begins, provided the buyer expressly agreed to lose it. In practice, that calls for a clear consent checkbox, not pre-ticked, before access is granted. Without that record, the 14 days still apply.
VAT. Digital services sold to consumers in the European Union follow the VAT rules of the buyer's country. The European Commission runs the VAT One Stop Shop, which lets businesses outside the EU declare those sales through a dedicated scheme instead of registering in each country. How your business fits is a conversation for your accountant before you scale.
What kind of offer adapts best to Spain?
One that teaches a skill that does not depend on your home country's rules, systems, or habits. A course on video editing, languages, or a work tool works the same in Madrid as anywhere else. A course on local taxes, paperwork, or domestic payment methods depends on its original context and would need to be rebuilt.
- Adapts easily: practical skills, tools, creativity, personal development, and products that already have a Spanish version.
- Needs review: products with prices in another currency, case studies from a single country, or very local cultural references.
- Does not adapt: products about legislation, taxes, or services that only exist in your home country.
If you already sell in Portugal, payment and currency work in a similar way, as we show in selling digital products in Portugal. The overview of both regions is in selling in Latin America and Europe.
How can you test Spain without building a new operation?
Use the offer you already have, adjust what the buyer reads before paying, and measure Spain on its own. The test does not need a new product, only a page version and a prepared checkout.
- Review the sales page and emails for peninsular Spanish.
- Set the price in euros and confirm the checkout shows the final amount in that currency.
- Check which payment methods a buyer in Spain actually sees.
- Add the line about bank confirmation next to the pay button.
- Add the digital content consent checkbox before granting access.
- Run a small ad budget and track Spain's checkout conversion separately from other markets.
If Spain converts below other countries, the list of hypotheses in the checkout conversion guide shows what to test first.
Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the internet.
Where does Mundpay fit when selling to Spain?
Mundpay handles language and currency at checkout, so you do not build a page for each country. The checkout identifies the buyer by IP, translates the page, and converts the price to their currency, so a buyer in Spain sees the checkout in Spanish and the amount in euros. Apple Pay and Google Pay shorten mobile payment, and coverage spans 190 countries, which keeps Latin America, Portugal, and Spain on the same checkout. How translation works is covered in automatic checkout translation.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to re-record my course in Spain's Spanish?
Not always. A course recorded in Latin American Spanish is understood in Spain. What matters most is the sales page, the checkout, and the emails, which should use peninsular Spanish vocabulary and forms of address.
What is Bizum?
It is a Spanish payment method linked to the buyer's bank account. In an online purchase, the buyer enters the phone number linked to Bizum and confirms the payment in their banking app notification. It only shows at checkout if the payment processor offers it.
Does every card purchase in Spain require authentication?
As a rule, yes. The EU payment services directive, PSD2, requires strong customer authentication when the buyer initiates an electronic payment. The rule allows exemptions, but the buyer's bank and the processor decide when to apply them.
Can a buyer in Spain ask for a refund on an online course?
Distance purchases in the European Union carry a 14-day right of withdrawal. For digital content, that right ends once access starts, as long as the buyer expressly agreed to it beforehand. Without that recorded consent, the 14 days still apply.
Which currency should I charge buyers in Spain?
Euros. Spain uses the euro, and showing the final price in the buyer's currency keeps them from doing exchange-rate math at the last step of the purchase.
