The concept

Smart retry is the automatic new attempt to process a declined charge, made with different parameters, such as another acquirer or a different route, without the buyer having to do anything. To the buyer, the purchase is simply approved; the first decline is never noticed.

A meaningful share of declines in international transactions are temporary or specific to one route, not a definitive decline from the issuing bank. That's the type of decline smart retry can recover.

How it shows up in practice

You sell a product to a customer in the United States. The first attempt to charge their card comes back as declined. But instead of simply canceling the sale, the platform tries again a few days later, maybe using a different acquirer or another route. This time it goes through. For the customer, they never even knew the first attempt failed, for them the purchase was approved and that is it.

The only asset that can be protected from virtually any threat and increase in value year after year is the relationship you have with your customers.

Much of the refusal on international sales is temporary or specific to one processing route, not a definitive bank refusal. A smart retry recovers those sales without requiring customer action. It is particularly important in recurring billing, because if the first charge fails and there is no retry, the subscription drops on the second attempt.
