The concept

A rolling reserve is the percentage of a sale's value that the payment platform keeps set aside, outside the balance available for immediate withdrawal, for a set period. The reserve works as protection against chargebacks: if a sale is disputed within the reserve period, the set-aside amount covers the loss without affecting the rest of the seller's balance.

Once the reserve period passes with no chargeback, the held amount is released to the available balance as normal.

How it shows up in practice

A sale hits your platform account. You think you will withdraw everything, but the platform says part of it is held for a period as protection. If nobody contests that sale during that period, the held amount enters your available balance normally. If a chargeback shows up during that period, the platform uses that held value to cover the loss, without taking from the balance you already had.

The hold works like platform insurance against your chargebacks. The higher your chargeback rate goes, the larger the hold they charge you. That is why reducing chargebacks is not just about protecting your LTV, it is also about reducing money stuck waiting for the hold window to pass.
